Saving Bees
Supporting Manchester Business and Protecting the Environment
It is time to give back to Manchester businesses and provide practical help to the natural environment. Plan Bees was born out of necessity. It is vital that we protect our environment, help local businesses thrive and support communities across the UK to prosper. Protect, Thrive and Prosper are the three pillars that have guided Plan Bees from its inception.
Protect
Protecting the environment is essential for the survival of our communities, our livelihoods, and our planet. Bees are essential pollinators for all our fruit and vegetables. They are an essential part of the delicate ecosystem and they need protecting. The aim of Plan Bees is to support small businesses, such as beekeepers, hedgelayers and other cottage industries that protect and look after the land and the environment. This not only helps the bees, it supports local communities and families relying on local business.
Bloom
The focus of Plan Bees is to help the environment thrive, but not only our environment. Local businesses and communities across the country need support and encouragement so they can support the land, provide jobs and deliver the much needed care for local wildlife. We also support building successful environments for bees to thrive, which is essential for the entire ecosystem.
Prosper
Plan Bees was forged in the industrial landscape of Manchester, but with the vision to expand throughout the UK and beyond. Plan Bees is more than a sculpture in Manchester, it’s here to support businesses and help build a prosperous future for our planet in a practical, green and sustainable way. This includes encouraging activities such as:
- Plugging the gaps in rural hedges to maintain wildlife corridors.
- Supporting local businesses
- Protecting our environment
Plan Bees connects the urban and the rural, bringing the importance of our bees home.
To protect, support and help the bees thrive, a giant twelve-foot sculpture is being created for the centre of Manchester. The sculpture will be made of twenty thousand individual sterling silver bees. Each bee will be individually engraved and comes with a certificate of authenticity so you can find your personalised bee in the hive sculpture.
Give the Gift of a Bee and Be Part of Something Special
Buying a bee for a friend or a loved one, or even for yourself, is a great way of feeling connected to the heart of Manchester’s industrial heritage. It also contributes to supporting the environment, protecting the bees, and encouraging people to take note of the destruction that is happening to our planet.
How to protect the bees
Bee’s need 3 main things to thrive:
FOOD – They get their food by foraging from flowers rich in nectar and pollen. Different bee species are active throughout different parts of the year so it is important to have a variety of plants which flower in each season. They also have different lengths of tongues, which they use for feeding, so a variety of shapes of flowers is equally important.
NO PESTICIDES – It is important not to use pesticides in your garden, wherever possible. The damage they do to natural insect and animal life should not be underestimated. Furthermore, you can encourage the reduction of commercial use of pesticides by buying Organic produce and pushing the change.
SHELTER – You can help provide shelter for bees by adding an insect house into your garden, sometimes known as a bee hotel. Providing larger bushes and traditional hedgerows also act as natural habitat. Also try letting your lawn (or parts of your lawn) grow wild to provide shelter and wildflowers.
